PN Nuts for VLCC Tiller and Rudder Applications

DSME established in 1973 at Okpo Bay, Geoje Island on the Korean Peninsula has developed into the world’s premium specialised shipbuilding and offshore contractor that builds various vessels, offshore platforms, drilling rigs floating oil production units and defence vessels.

There are obvious benefits and economies of scale in building relatively large numbers of vessels such as Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC’s) to a common design. DSME have a very successful design of VLCC of 300,000 DWT . DSME won an order for 10 identical vessels and selected Pilgrim for the Tiller and Rudder fixing solutions.

Solution

The PILGRIM PN nuts are hydraulically operated and used to drive up the Tiller and Rudder up the tapered shaft to exert a design load sufficient to maintain maximum friction.

Tiller Nuts PN14 and Rudder Nuts PN15. Both nuts are large size with a diameter of nearly 1 Metre.
